99 cents worth of gas please

Posted under Being RSG, BlogHer, Everyday ramble by Recovering Straight Girl

It’s final primary day and I am looking forward to the whole thing being over. Time to unite the party–everyone fall in line–and let’s keep our eye on the big game in November.

Californians will be voting on whether or not to ban Gay Marriage on November 4th. Until then, the state will begin issuing marriage licenses, beginning June 17th. I hope those in the wedding industry are looking forward to a big surge in business this summer–California has a lot of gays! LeLo and I will be at BlogHer in San Francisco in July–if anyone was planning on arranging their wedding plans around my schedule.

Speaking of BlogHer. I just took a peak at the Agenda and noticed that there is a session on Queer BlogHer. If any of my fellow Queer Bloggers will be at the conference, send me an e-mail–perhaps we can organize a Queer Blogger cocktail party.

I enjoy cocktails–and just to clarify to a recent commenter–I’m co-dependent, not an enabler. If you’re going to accuse me of being something at least get the correct disorder. Geez.

It’s wrap-it-up week. Two school days left and one final. This is bittersweet as I will be happy to have the summer off from commuting to school but it also means that the children will be home All Day Long. This means that I have three long months to endure the pain of bored children who argue and create havoc disturbing my auditory environment continuously.

I certainly won’t be able to afford to go anywhere–with gas prices at $4.10 a gallon. Two days ago I paid $3.98–it cost $67.00 to fill my tank (or the equivalent of four tops at Marshalls.)

I remember when gas hit $1.00 a gallon. People were outraged, they protested, they bitched, they picketed, they complained. I was in the car with my neighbor when she went to the gas station and filled her car with 99 cents worth of gas–just to make a point. What that point was exactly, I’m not certain, but she made one.

And here we are, paying over four dollars a gallon and no one seems to care so much. We’re complaining, but we’re still driving around. Today I drove DD#1 and two neighbors to school because it was pouring down rain and she was afraid that she would melt. The carpool lane was filled, bumper to bumper, people everywhere driving their Suburbans and their Tahoes and their whatevers. I was driving the Lesbaru and having anxiety–wondering how much it was costing to drive my kid to school.

I think this summer will be spent hanging at home a lot–doing some projects and riding our bikes. I will be writing. I have some projects brewing in the back of my head including a new blog project and more. Much more. It will all be on the list. The Summer List of Things To Do.

Summer–it’s just around the corner–time to get your list on.

  1. limpy99 Said,

I plan on spending my summer setting fire to Humvee dealerships. using gasoline. Because I love irony.

  2. melissa lion Said,

You are such an enabler. C’mon.

    Come.

    On.

And you know what I’m talking about.

And I love you for it.

  3. zoe Said,

Wish I was going to be at BlogHer too. Enjoy! Oh, and have a drink or three for me if you have that cocktail party.

  4. Wendy Said,

What a great chuckle this gave me today!!! “I’m co-dependent, not an enabler. If you’re going to accuse me of being something at least get the correct disorder. Geez.” AMEN!!! ;-)
And get this… I pay $4.80 per gallon for diesel for my little Jetta! AACK!! (it was $2.50 a year ago per my gas log). But the up side is that I get almost 45mpg.

  5. yankeegirl Said,

Hey RSG- I’m trying to finish up for the quarter too! I’ve got way too many loose ends to wrap up before the 11th of June. I’m stocking up on the caffine for now- cocktails/wine will be for AFTER the 11th!
    Good luck getting everything done!

    School is ending?

  7. DolphynGyrl Said,

There’s still the possibility that the judges may stay the effective date of the decision pending the November election. We won’t know FOR SURE until June 16th.

It’s ok, though… We’ve still got our appointment for June 17th! We’re READY and WAITING and keeping our fingers crossed.

    :)

  8. Bammy Said,

I am confused about something… Did not the California Courts say.. that is was discriminatory.. therefor.. unconstitutional.. to not let gay people marry? If it is unconstitutional.. how can they pass a constitutional amendment.. banning gay marraige?
If it passes.. would there be a fight again.. to determine if that is a non discriminatory amendment?

  9. Tracey Said,

We are paying nearly $2.00 a LITRE for petrol here in West Oz, about 2 years ago it was 63c a litre.

  10. Charlotte Said,

Speaking of gas (no, I’m not going to tell a fart joke)… I’m pretty sure this war in Iraq is not about terrorists. In fact, I’m convinced (as are many others) that it’s about oil. So it amuses me when I see giant SUVs - primarily Hummers, which there are TONS of around here because folks here have lots of money and want everyone to know it - “Look at me driving my giant SUV. It doesn’t matter if gas is $4.10 a gallon. I can afford it. Because I’m rich.”- ANYWAY.. there are these giant cars with “Bring Our Soldiers Home” bumper stickers. Umm… you are alone in your Hummer. Trade it in for a Smart Car ( http://www.smartusa.com/) and bring the soliders home yourself, buttmunch. Thank you.

I suppose I could have ranted that on my own blog. My apologies. :-)

Sidenote: I haven’t felt the need or desire to say “buttmunch” in years. That was quite satisfying.

  11. DolphynGyrl Said,

Bammy - Well, the California Supreme Court said it was against California’s CURRENT constitution. If voters ammend the constitution, then it would not longer be against the constitution.

Sadly, there are a lot of people who feel that it is not discriminatory, and, further, that the court stepped on “the people’s” toes. “The people” voted that law in and the court overturned it.

Of course, “the people” thought racial segregation was a good idea, too, once upon a time.

  12. Bammy Said,

Well thats kinda what I am getting to I think… racial segregation.. shit maybe I need a history lesson here.. Was it declared unconstitutional or did people just get their heads out of their asses? I mean.. all the Jim crow laws we had in Texas and such.. the literacy tests for voting and the voting tax.. were they not declared unconstitutional? legislators just create laws.. then it is up to the COURT to determine it validity and constitutionality ( So sayeth Joe Sutter Prof of Govt and my lil college by the freeway)
Can you amend the constitution with something unconstitutional?

  13. DolphynGyrl Said,

I believe that most laws relating to racial segregation were declared unconstitutional by the courts. It was a long time after that before some people stopped being jerks about it (and some never did).

As much as this sounds like an oxymoron, if you amend the constitution with something that is unconstitutional, then that something ceases to be unconstitutional.
