My letter to Sally Kern–

I am a lesbian woman in a committed relationship with my partner; the two of us are raising three daughters (9, 10, and 13) in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon.
Not only was I horrified to hear the news clip with the hateful words that you spoke about me and my family–my children heard it as well.
Imagine how those innocent little girls must feel to hear someone referring to the mothers that they love as “terrorists!” It doesn’t say on your website if you have children, but I would hope as the Christian woman that you profess to be you would want to do your part to protect and honor children. Instead your vile comments were sent over the airwaves to the over fourteen million children in this country who have a parent who is Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, or Transgendered. Over fourteen million children heard what you said about the parents that they love. Over fourteen million children were made to feel ashamed of their families. Their families who are JUST LIKE YOURS.
We don’t have an Agenda or a Lifestyle. Rock stars have “lifestyles,” high society politicians have “lifestyles,” The Queen has a “lifestyle.”
We have A Life.
We go to work, we go to school, we attend our kids’ school concerts and soccer games, we take care of our home, we go to The Grand Canyon on vacation, we do all of the typical things that every other American Family does on a daily basis. We volunteer, we contribute to charity, we pay taxes, and we VOTE. I fail to see how our Life is Dangerous?
My children heard that.
I am a Christian. I follow the teachings of Christ. I believe in His Word and no where in His Word did he say that I was a terrorist, or a threat, or dangerous. As a matter of fact, Jesus said NOTHING about homosexuality, nadda, zip, zero. I would think that as the wife of a preacher—You would know that. Jesus did say all kinds of things about being nice to people however, and respected them and accepting them. Perhaps you could try a little of that brand of Christianity for awhile? I think you’ll find that you sleep much better, and really the world would be a much better place.
You deserve to be forgiven—I’m willing to forgive you—but first you must make amends, learn from your mistake and ask to be forgiven by the millions of GLBTQ citizens of this country and the fourteen million of their children who heard what you said.
My children heard that.
Think about that with a great deal of responsibility. Ask The Lord about what it means to harm over fourteen million children in our country. Pray about that and get back to me with your answer. I have faith that The Lord will whisper loudly to you and help you to clearly see the faces of those children who’s hearts you have broken with your hateful words.

I wonder what Sally’s constituents are saying and what they believe about her statements. From what I’ve been able to find, she’s sticking to everything she said. Unbelievable, isn’t it?

I’m glad I didn’t hear Sally Kern OR know who she is. Please send a copy of this letter to your newspaper (or the NYTimes), too. False remarks, labeling, and “rudeness” have no place in public life. Best wishes.

Oklahoma still hasn’t decided whether same-sex adoptions–of OTHER states–deserve recognition within its borders. Meaning if our son has an emergency medical situation they have the “right” to insist his biological mother consent…unbelievable.
So we avoid the state altogether.
I hope Ms. Kern hears you and finds a heart within which to look for redemption.
Some people amaze me with their ignorance…hopefully Sally opens her eyes soon.

Dear RSG; What a fantastic and mature letter. You represent at least myself as a lesbian very well. I really appreciate your tact in getting your point across so sharply.
My sister and her partner have been together going on 20 years, have two children and here in Canada, fortunately, my sister was able to adopt them both. You are right, Ms. Kern does deserve forgiveness however not from me. I cannot see it through to forgive someone who hurts children, even with words. And frankly, I am getting tired of the ignorance and the hate, but you remind me that getting tired can equate to quitting.
So, thank you for not quitting.

Did you watch the Ellen show today (march 12th)? She played Ms. Kern’s (the true Assclown, that she is!) clip and then tried to call her while on the air. Not surprisingly, there was no answer and Ellen couldn’t leave a message because the user’s “mailbox was full”. Oh how I wish she answered!

I have read postings on many websites about this incident, most of them vicious, vulgar and just as stupid as Sally Kern’s speech. By contrast your letter is intelligent, eloquent and well argued. Of all the feedback that woman is surely getting it would be best if she actually read yours because it would surely stir something in her heart.
Beautifully written. Strong. And makes her lose at her OWN game.
On a side note, she does have two children. Two sons. The word on the streets is that one son might identify as a gay man. Her original website had mention of her two sons. Now there is no mention whatsoever. This isn’t to make it a point of outting him, but there is something fishy going on here.
I think you should send Ellen D a copy of your letter, it says alot about the everyday gay person and how we live. Oh and she does have two sons.
