Peaceful Demonstration

The rain stopped during the rally. DD#1 said that it was because “Mother Nature wants us to win.”

The girls only complained a little, and we were able to see LeLo and AdRi for about two minutes. Sadly, we missed seeing our other blog friends. . .

It was a good rally, good speeches, and lots of people. Oregonians care about equal rights and the turn out tonight reflected this fact, which made my heart happy.

We don’t want anything different than what anyone else has. We want our relationships recognized, we want to be able to take care of our families. Our relationship does not threaten heterosexual marriages; heterosexuals threaten heterosexual marriages. We want to be treated fairly and equally. No more.

I will hold hope in my heart that the judge will allow the domestic partnership law to take effect and grant us the basic fairness that we deserve. I will also hold in my heart that my daughters will grow into adults looking back at this time and chuckle at how ridiculous it was–denying people equality, how absurd. I hope that they will remember standing up for their family and doing what was right for not just their mothers but for all Oregonians.

Thanks to my friend Stacy and her daughter for coming with us tonight. She is a true friend, who despite being much to the right (politically) than me, has always supported and loved me. She’s one of the “right” Christians.

Thank you to my blogging friend who have sent nice words of support and positive energy our way. I realize that many of you live in states where the idea of gaining domestic partnerships may seem like a pipe dream. I promise you, I will do my part every day to stand up for you too. It’s what we all deserve.

Here’s to the Constitution! And Peaceful Demonstration!

  1. Emma Said,

I am an expat Portlander and my dad went to the rally you went to tonight. Thanks for going and representing! Up here in Seattle we are cheering for you all.

  2. K Fish Said,

What a great shot! Can we post that on the site tomorrow?

No more posting now though. Must sleep. Thank you RSG & Family for standing up!

  3. Patri Ann Said,

One state away, in the I-da-ho, domestic partnerships are a pipe dream away. But I’m so pleased that Oregon is at least entertaining the notion.

I’m with DD, mother nature, just like all the goddesses, wants you to win.

  4. fairydogmother Said,

‘Mother Nature wants us to win.’

Aw, so sweet, and so wise! I’ll have to remember that next time I’m wallowing in frustration that we still lack basic fairness.

Along with Emma I’m cheering for you all from Seattle as well. And in cheering for you, we’re cheering for us all. One step at a time and eventually we will all get there.

  5. Lori H Said,

Every single person who takes one step to make a difference does make a difference.

Even in places like Iowa, where I was raised, headway is being made. Keep in touch with Lambda Legal and HRC if you want to make a bigger difference in your state! And VOTE for the people who will help make it happen.

I just keep hoping for equality in my lifetime. I don’t think it’s a pipe dream.

  6. iburyem Said,

Sadly, it is still a pipe dream in Oklahomo. However, with each state (and family) that stands up for basic rights, we all gain hope that someday it will happen here. Great job!

  7. Valerie Said,

    That is a great picture!

Domestic partnership is a pipe dream away here in Texas too, but it’s nice to see huge crowds of people coming together in support of it in other states.

  8. Portia Said,

Way to go! Keep up the peaceful persistence. It will pay off. What a beautiful family!

  9. Patti Said,

Way to go! I am filled with… awe that you are such a get-up-and-goer (being that i’m an apathetic bitch) and you are setting a wonderful example for your daughters!

  10. Lisa Said,

    The family that demonstrates together…
I think it’s fantastic that you all did this together.
People here are just not into standing up for our rights– not that we have any hope of Domestic Partnerships here. :-(

  11. Amy J. Ruiz Said,

I saw your signs from across the way, and wanted to wade through the crowd to say hello—but damn, that was a big crowd!

  12. limpy99 Said,

Oh hell, I live in CT. You can’t go anywhere without tripping over a civil union ceremony. I tell you, it’s the end of Western Civilization! The END DAMMIT!!!!

    Still, the parades are nice.

  13. reelgal Said,

Hurray for all of you! Hurray! (Can you hear me cheering from the other coast?) I hope you get your dp soon!

  14. Oregonian37 Said,

I saw the signs too. Very cool. I second Amy. DAMN that was a big crowd! I tend not to get my hopes up sometimes but I was so not disappointed last night. It was packed. Fortunately folks were more than happy to huddle closer whenever we needed to get people in chairs through there!

When I left and was walking back toward the car near Burnside, we were a good 3 blocks away before I finally couldn’t hear the speakers anymore.

If she keeps this up. I may have to change my crush/idol from Stevie to Governor Roberts! I just love that woman….

  15. jess Said,

    Gorgeous!

  16. Smalltowndyke Said,

so glad it went well. ohio will catch up someday i can feel it!!!

  17. Heather Said,

    What a beautiful family!

I am not hopeful for Texas.

But I stand behind you and your family. I hope that counts for something!

  18. Lachlan Said,

    Limpy, you rock my friend.

RSG- GO YOU! I’m so glad you all got to go out. Our fingers are crossed up here in Seattle that you will get the basic rights you deserve. Soon.
