Love’s Labored Day
Posted under Holidays and Vacations by Recovering Straight GirlIt was Labor Day yesterday and I forgot to wear my white skirt one more time for the season. I’m a stickler for those rules and I don’t care what Stacy and Clinton have to say about it, I will always obey the “Wear white between Memorial and Labor Day” rule for-ev-ah. You can’t stop me–no one can.
Instead we spent Labor Day waking up in Friday Harbor, in the San Juan Islands. It was a lovely place filled with lovely people but the best part of that trip was the ferry road going there and coming back. We arrived at Friday Harbor the day before from Vancouver B.C. where we also had a fun time. A short time but fun and when I say fun I mean it was fun to see stuff there from the car and hang out at a bar in the gay district and have a very nice dinner at a revolving restaurant above the city. The part that wasn’t fun was when I started puking my guts out in the middle of the night and thought I was dying a slow and painful death. I wanted Cher to take me to the hospital but you know, it was Canada and they have that socialized medicine so I figured I’d probably die anyway waiting for the ten hours to be seen by a doctor who answered to the Canadian government so I’d rather die in our fancy hotel room instead.
By the grace of god, I did not die but for awhile I wanted to.
Cher got me ice and held a cold cloth on my head and listened to me cry that I probably had stomach cancer. She told me I didn’t and I wasn’t going to throw up any more and I didn’t.
The day before we hung out with some Jet City Rollergirls in Seattle and had a great time. And when I say a great time I mean that we had super yummy $5 martinis followed by dinner and followed by drinking wine at their house until I had to go to bed because I was probably about to take my clothes off or something equally as stupid.
I don’t think there is a connection to that and my puking the next day, but one never knows.
So I was in love over Labor Day having a romantic weekend with my sweetie but at the same time I was laboring because I puked my guts out, which is almost the same as labor only different and without any good drugs.
And by the way people: Summer is NOT over just because it was Labor Day yesterday. Summer doesn’t officially end until September 19th and it is not yet September 19th, so everyone who says Summer Is Over can officially shut it.
That is all.
Ok, I agree you must never wear white after Labor day, but it is killing me to say good bye to my cute white flip flops. BUT since they are summer shoes, I should be safe in wearing them still and not shunned by the scary suburban moms right? Oh WAIT, I WANT to be shunned by the scary suburban moms. My offer still stands to take DD 3 to soccer if you need me!!! She is a great girl!! (I like all 3 of your lovely girls)
That’s right, SUMMER IS NOT OVER.
Thank you for speaking about this. Do you have some sort of 12 steps to summer not being over that you can point me to as I go through this difficult time?
Yours,
The Recovering Californian
I do not wear white shoes after labor day or before Memorial. I don’t know what it is because I am certainly no Emily Post.
I have a beautiful winter white pair of boots and wool coat but white/white is for after Memorial and before Labor. No exceptions!!
